A man has been detained in relation to the vehicle pursuit that ended with two crashes during a human smuggling attempt, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
At about 8:42 a.m. May 9, troopers were attempting to locate a white Dodge Challenger involved in human smuggling near the Mines Road area.
A trooper located the Dodge on south Interstate 35. The driver refused to stop when a traffic stop was attempted, and a pursuit ensued, authorities said.
During the chase, the Dodge crashed into a cement wall on Monterrey Avenue and West Lyon Street, causing the vehicle's hood to open.
Despite the damage, the driver continued evading with the hood open until it crashed into another vehicle at the intersection of East Calton Road and Marcella Avenue. Initial reports indicated that the crashes occurred along McPherson Road.
The driver exited the vehicle to try to flee the scene on foot, but a trooper caught up to him shortly after.
Authorities then discovered four migrants inside the vehicle. U.S. Border Patrol agents took custody of the migrants.
DPS identified the driver as Humberto Misael Garcia, 31. He was turned over to Border Patrol for an investigation.
DPS will be filing for arrest warrants at a later time for evading arrest with a vehicle, evading arrest on foot, reckless driving, accident involving damage and human smuggling.
