A Dearborn police officer's cruiser was heavily damaged when a fireworks mortar round was fired at the vehicle while the officer breaking up a group of teenagers shooting off fireworks in the street.

A Michigan police officer was attacked with a fireworks mortar round while he was in his cruiser on the Fourth of July.

The incident happened as Dearborn police were breaking up a group of teenagers who were setting off fireworks in the street Tuesday, WJBK-TV reports. That's when a mortar round was fired at an officer's patrol car.

"Totally unacceptable. It's illegal, it’s dangerous. People can get hurt, people can get killed," said Cpl. Dan Bartok. "We aren't talking about sparklers. We are talking about mortars and large fireworks that fire into the sky."

The attack didn't injure the officer, but his cruiser was heavily damaged by the pyrotechnic. Although the attack was captured by the vehicle's dashboard camera, police are still searching for a suspect.

"This is not something we are used to, and this is not something we will get used to," said Bartok.
