Watch 'Freak Accident' Send Tire into Pa. Police SUV's Windshield

Feb. 15, 2022
A dashboard camera captured two Spring Township police officers monitoring traffic from a median when a pickup truck's rear tire detached, caromed off the hood of the police unit and into the windshield.

A pair of Spring Township police officers avoided injury Monday after a tire detached from a pickup truck and smashed into the windshield of their SUV.

Two officers were monitoring traffic Monday from a median along the 1300 block of Zion Road when the rear driver-side tire from a pickup truck heading westbound detached and slammed into the windshield, the department wrote on Facebook.

The tire caromed off the hood of the car, into the windshield and off of the opposite side of the road without hitting any other vehicles, police wrote.

The vehicle was extensively damaged, police wrote. The department did not have an estimate of repair costs as of Monday evening, police Chief Adam Salyards wrote in a text message.

The driver of the pickup truck was not issued a citation. Salyards wrote the crash was a "freak accident."
