Alabama K-9 Killed; Suspect Apprehended

A K-9 with the Ventress Correctional Facility died Monday night during a search for a suspect.

A K-9 with the Ventress Correctional Facility in Dale County, Ala. died Monday night during a search for a suspect.

Tracker, a 5-year-old Beagle, was killed while chasing Billy Wayne Lomaneck, who was wanted in connection to a rape and incest case, according to WSFA-TV.

The K-9 ran Lomaneck out of a field toward Dale County Sheriff's deputies when a shootout occurred, fatally injuring the dog.

Lomaneck was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Alabama Department of Corrections spokeswoman Kristi Gates said the department, "is saddened by the loss of Tracker, but happy that his efforts, along with the K-9 officers, ultimately assisted in capturing the suspect and bringing him to justice."

The shooting is currently being investigated by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation.
