Alabama Police Officer Wounded; Suspect Dead

A Homewood police officer was wounded and a suspect was killed during a shootout in the parking lot of a business on Thursday.

A Homewood, Alabama police officer was wounded and a suspect was killed during a shootout in the parking lot of a business on Thursday.

Officers on patrol spotted two vehicles in the lot of Allsouth Appliance at 345 State Farm Parkway around 1:30 a.m., one of which had the trunk open, according to AL.com.

The officers put a description of the vehicle out over the police radio to see if it was suspected in a rash a break-ins. As they attempted to identify one of the primary suspects, he fled the scene on foot. Both of the officers deployed their Tasers, but they had no effect on the suspect.

The suspect, identified as 35-year-old John Payne, pulled out a weapon and shot at the officers who returned fire.

One of the officers was struck in the thigh and rushed to Grandview Medical Center and was treated and released later in the day.

Payne was pronounced dead on the scene and two other persons of interest were questioned and released.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency will conduct the investigation.
