Suffolk County Police Commissioner Timothy D. Sini and Chief of Department Stuart Cameron will fulfill the enduring passion of a 16-year-old cancer patient from Medford, New York, by making him a ‘Detective for a Day’ during a swearing-in ceremony at Police Headquarters in Yaphank, NY today, Tuesday, August 1.

Sean Patrick Dixon was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, when he was 14-years-old. The cancer lead to the amputation of his right leg at the hip. Sean is currently receiving medical treatment for growing tumors.

Through Sean’s closeness with his grandfather, a former Nassau County police officer, and SCPD Detective Troyano, he developed a passion to learn about police work and to become a detective in the SCPD.

For his recent 16th birthday, Commissioner Sini and Chief Cameron sent him a video message inviting him to join the department for a day.

Sean will be sworn-in in front of members of the department, his parents Kim and Sean and his grandparents John and Lillian Henderson.

Throughout the day, Sean will work alongside detectives from the Identification Section to dust for, lift and compare fingerprints, meet with Emergency Services Section officers to explore and learn about the tools the officers use in aiding in detective work including, small tactical robot, the Bear armored truck, patrol truck with jaws of life etc., and interact with the highly skilled police dogs in our Canine Section to learn how they also assist in detective or homicide investigative work.

When Sean is completed with the day’s training, Commissioner Sini will present him with a proclamation. He will cap off the day with a modified ‘walk-out’ traditionally reserved for high-ranking members of the department when they retire. Department members will line up outside of headquarters and clap and wish him well upon his departure.

The swearing in ceremony is planned for 10:30 a.m. The Presentation of Proclamation and the walkout ceremony is later today at 4.
