Nine Phoenix police officers were injured, and a woman was in critical condition following a fatal standoff at a home Friday.

The incident happened at about 2 a.m. as officers responded to assist a woman with a man who was believed to have had a romantic relationship with her, KPHO-TV reports. A standoff ensued involving the man and a baby who was thought to be the former couple's child.

"There was a baby in the home who was at some point placed in a carrier and placed outside," Police Chief Jeri Williams. "As officers went to bring that baby to safety, the suspect continued to shoot."

Authorities said the standoff ended at around 7 a.m. Officers found the suspect dead inside the house.
