SAINT PETER, Minnesota -- A Saint Peter police officer was shot and wounded during a barricaded suspect incident Thursday night following a vehicle pursuit that began in Mankato, according to the Saint Peter Police Department.
The incident started June 18 when officers with the Mankato Police Department attempted to stop a speeding vehicle. The driver, an adult male, allegedly refused to stop and fled north on Highway 169 into Saint Peter, prompting a pursuit.
Officers positioned near Highway 99 deployed a tire deflation device in an effort to stop the vehicle. According to police, the driver avoided the device and continued through Saint Peter before stopping in the 2100 block of Bunker Lane. The suspect then entered a residence, leading to a barricaded situation.
Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene and secured the area. Authorities issued a shelter-in-place advisory for nearby residents while officers attempted to negotiate a peaceful resolution with the suspect.
According to the Saint Peter Police Department, negotiations were unsuccessful. During the incident, multiple shots were fired, and a Saint Peter police officer was struck in the arm.
The injured officer was transported to River’s Edge Hospital & Clinic before being airlifted to a hospital in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area for additional treatment. The department said the officer remains in stable condition.
Following the shooting, officers entered the residence and located the suspect deceased. Authorities subsequently lifted the shelter-in-place advisory.
Police said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The Saint Peter Police Department requested assistance from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), which is leading the investigation. The department said body-worn cameras were activated during the incident.
