A Phoenix police officer was seriously wounded after being shot multiple times early Tuesday.
The incident involving Officer Tyler Moldovan, 22, happened shortly before 2 a.m. while police were investigating a vehicle doing doughnuts, KPHO-TV reports. While searching an apartment complex, a suspect opened fire, and multiple shots struck Moldovan.
Officers didn't return fire, but they were able to take the suspect into custody. No other officers were injured, and Moldovan was rushed to the hospital.
"Officer Moldovan just celebrated his 22nd birthday last month, has been with the department for a year and a half. He graduated from the academy in March of this year and recently became a solo officer. … I can say this, Tyler is doing exactly what we expect our police officers to do … and that’s fight and that’s continue to fight. So please keep us in your thoughts and prayers."
Williams said she had no words for the shooting, adding that "this kind of incident sends shockwaves throughout our entire community."
The shooting is still under investigation.
