EDINBURG, Texas — An Edinburg police officer was critically injured after being shot multiple times while responding to a disturbance call Thursday morning.

According to Edinburg Police Chief Jaime Ayala, officers were dispatched at approximately 10 a.m. to an apartment complex in the 200 block of Fig Street. A woman had called police to report that her brother was acting erratically. Two sisters were inside the apartment with the 21-year-old man.

The first responding officer encountered gunfire while approaching the apartment and was struck multiple times. Additional officers arriving at the scene also came under fire.

Despite the gunfire, responding officers reached their injured colleague, moved him to cover and began providing medical aid. The officer was transported by fellow officers to DHR hospital for emergency treatment.

Ayala identified the injured officer as a four-year veteran of the Edinburg Police Department. The officer was reported to be in critical but stable condition following surgery, according to the department's Spanish-language update.

The suspect reportedly used both a pistol and an assault rifle during the incident. After an exchange of gunfire, responding officers established a perimeter and entered the property. They found the 21-year-old man dead in the backyard from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

The suspect lived at the apartment with his sisters and had an outstanding probation violation warrant originating north of San Antonio, Ayala said.

The Texas Rangers will lead the shooting investigation, while the Edinburg Police Department's Internal Affairs Division will conduct an internal review of department policies and procedures.

Investigators are conducting interviews with witnesses, the suspect's sisters and responding officers to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office and Texas Department of Public Safety assisted with securing the scene and providing support during the response and investigation.

Ayala emphasized that the scene was secured and there was no ongoing threat to the community. He said the department would release additional information as the investigation develops.

In a statement, the Edinburg Police Department asked the community to support the injured officer and his loved ones.

"Please join us in keeping our officer and his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers during this challenging time. We stand together in support, praying for strength, comfort, and a swift recovery."
