CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- Corpus Christi police officers responded to a reported shooting on Ayers Street Friday afternoon, that left one man dead and resulted in multiple officers being shot during a subsequent encounter with a suspect.
According to the Corpus Christi Police Department, officers were dispatched at 2:47 p.m. to the 4900 block of Ayers Street. Upon arrival, officers located a male victim with multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was transported by the Corpus Christi Fire Department to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
At approximately 3:33 p.m., officers located a vehicle believed to be connected to the homicide in the 3100 block of Agnes Street. While officers were detaining the suspect, police said the individual produced a weapon and began firing.
Officers returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times, according to the department.
Two Corpus Christi police officers were shot during the exchange and transported to a local hospital. One officer remains in critical condition, and the second officer is listed as stable. A third officer sustained shrapnel-related injuries and was treated by medics at the scene.
The suspect, identified by police as a 38-year-old male, is hospitalized in stable condition and remains in police custody.
The Corpus Christi Police Department said the involved officers have been placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with department policy. The incident remains an active and ongoing investigation.
