TAMPA, Florida -- Two Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office deputies wounded during an ambush shooting in Ruskin on July 16 have been released from the hospital and will continue recovering at home, according to the agency.

Deputy Colton Daniels, 39, was released on Friday, followed by Deputy Sopharmony Muon, 33, whose release was announced by the Sheriff's Office on Saturday, after receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the shooting.

"Seeing Deputy Muon walk out of that hospital today is a moment we will not soon forget. His strength and positive attitude through this have been remarkable, and we are beyond thankful for the outcome," Sheriff Chad Chronister said. "We can't say thank you enough to TGH and to this community, whose support has carried him and his family through every step of this."

Speaking from the hospital before his release, Muon reflected on the incident and the mission that brought deputies to the scene.

"She needed our help, and it was time for us to work," Muon said. "And what I did for her and the outcome doesn't change, the outcome doesn't change, because I'll do it for anyone who calls, anyone who needs our help."

Muon also thanked the community for its support during his recovery.

"It's humbling and overwhelming at times, but it's like a good overwhelming, you know?" Muon said. "Just the amount of love that people have shown strangers, people I've never met or seen, care enough to give me a piece of their time. Time is precious, and they're giving that to me. It's amazing."

He said the response from fellow deputies and the public reinforced the commitment shared across law enforcement.

"There's so much love here. I don't know what to say. I just, I feel it," Muon said. "We all signed up to do the same thing. Any of you guys, if you heard what happened to this person, you would have done the same thing. You would have been there. If it was your call, you would have did the same thing. I know it. Each and every one of us... I love you. It's just, it's so overwhelming and I'm truly blessed."

Daniels also expressed gratitude for the support he has received since the shooting.

"It's been absolutely overwhelming. The support from the community that has already reached out, from the sheriff's office and from the hospital," Daniels said. "It's just been overwhelming with the amount of support people have shown already."

Daniels said his training prepared him to react when the gunfire erupted.

"Looking back, after the fact, the training just literally kicked in," Daniels said. "I knew that once I saw the gun pointed at me, and heard gunshots, I knew to try to get cover and get behind something solid on the car."

Following their releases, both deputies will continue recovering at home. According to the Sheriff's Office, Daniels and his family have requested privacy during his recovery.

"We are incredibly grateful that Deputy Daniels is on his way to a full recovery. This has been a difficult time for him, his family, and our entire Sheriff's Office, but his strength through this has been remarkable," Chronister said. "We want to thank TGH for providing incredible care and to the community for all of the support, prayers, and well-wishes during this time."

The deputies were injured during a deputy-involved shooting on West Shell Point Road in Ruskin after investigators responded to a report from a woman who told deputies her ex-boyfriend, Christopher Dmuchowski, 34, had held her captive at gunpoint throughout the previous night.

According to the Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to Dmuchowski's residence at 9:52 a.m. on July 16 after receiving information that he was armed and alone. Deputies deployed a drone to monitor the scene and observed Dmuchowski leave the apartment and walk toward a vehicle in the parking lot.

Investigators said Dmuchowski opened fire as Muon arrived, striking him. Daniels arrived moments later and was also shot. Sergeant Harrison Bashner, 53, responded during the exchange of gunfire and shot Dmuchowski.

"This suspect was intent on killing our deputies," Chronister said. "He ambushed them, and he would have succeeded if not for the heroic actions of one of our own. Because of the training, technology, and equipment our deputies are provided, this response was a success. They are trained to react under the most dangerous circumstances, and that preparation made all the difference today."

According to the Sheriff's Office, Dmuchowski, a convicted felon, was transported to Tampa General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:32 p.m.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting the investigation into the deputy-involved shooting.
