Ala. Sheriff's Deputy Shot, Wounded During Traffic Stop

The shooting happened after a Lee County Sheriff's Office deputy had pulled over a motorcyclist in Beauregard, and a suspect has been taken into custody.

Multiple reports say a Lee County deputy was shot this morning during a traffic stop in Beauregard.

WRBL is reporting that, according to Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones, a suspect in the shooting is in custody.

Jones said the deputy, who was alert at the scene of the shooting, has been taken to Piedmont Columbus Regional Midtown emergency room for treatment. The shooting happened at around 8:30 a.m. when the deputy pulled over a motorcyclist for a traffic stop.

The suspect in the shooting has also been injured and is being treated at Piedmont Columbus Regional Midtown.

A police convoy accompanying the deputy’s ambulance included cars from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Russell County Sheriff’s Office, Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office, Columbus police, Phenix City police and Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

According to WTVM, Opelika police will take over the investigation into the incident.
