A woman was shot and killed, and a man was taken into custody after Coconut Creek police officers investigated a possible car theft.

Three Florida police officers were injured in a fatal shooting following an apparent car robbery Monday.

The incident happened just before 8:30 p.m. when a Coconut Creek police officer spotted a car that had been stolen from Parkland earlier that evening, the department stated in an online update. A driver and a passenger were inside the vehicle, and it was stopped outside a business complex.

No details were given about what prompted the gunfire, but the woman driving the stolen car was shot and killed. A man who also was in the vehicle was taken into custody with charges pending.

Three officers were taken to the hospital, and their injuries weren't considered life-threatening. It wasn't clear how the officers were injured in the shooting.

A K-9 also was hurt during the incident. The dog was taken to an animal hospital and is expected to recover.

The two officers who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative, per department policy. The shooting is being investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
