  • An armored Kentucky State Police vehicle played a key role in rescuing Adair County sheriff's deputies and a civilian who had been pinned down by gunfire for hours during a tense standoff with an armed suspect.

Body and dashboard camera footage captured a shootout Wednesday between a Texas police officer and a man accused of attacking and threatening a person, leading to an hourlong standoff.

The incident happened just before 8:30 a.m. when Austin police received a report of a man assaulting and putting a gun to an individual's head, the department stated in a news release. The victim was able to give a description to officers, kicking off a search for the suspect, later identified as Gregory Lane. 

Officer Stephen Abbott spotted Lane in an apartment complex parking lot and ordered him to drop his handgun. That led Lane to retreat behind a parked vehicle, and Abbott took cover behind his cruiser.

Lane then began shooting, and Abbott returned fire. After the exchange of gunfire, Lane ran into an apartment in the complex.

A perimeter was established around the apartment, and Lane, who said he wasn't alone, asked to speak with a federal agent.

A SWAT unit, as well as other specialized resources, responded to the scene, and negotiators worked to de-escalate the situation. At 9:45 a.m., Lane surrendered, and he was taken into custody.

Lane was charged with attempted capital murder and aggravated assault.

The incident remains under investigation.
