Video: Texas Officer Trades Gunfire With Gunman Before Standoff

After tracking down a suspect linked to a violent assault, an Austin police officer came under fire in an apartment complex parking lot, leading to a shootout and a roughly hourlong standoff.

Lane then began shooting, and Abbott returned fire. After the exchange of gunfire, Lane ran into an apartment in the complex.

A perimeter was established around the apartment, and Lane, who said he wasn't alone, asked to speak with a federal agent.

A SWAT unit, as well as other specialized resources, responded to the scene, and negotiators worked to de-escalate the situation. At 9:45 a.m., Lane surrendered, and he was taken into custody.

Lane was charged with attempted capital murder and aggravated assault.

The incident remains under investigation.
