DETROIT -- A standoff that began early Tuesday morning has ended after the gunman, who had taken hostages, killed himself inside his Detroit home Wednesday morning. According to Fox 2 Detroit, police confirmed the suspect, a 38-year-old man, died from a self-inflicted gunshot around 7:05 a.m. Wednesday.

The standoff began Tuesday after police in Redford Township attempted to stop the suspect for a traffic violation. The suspect fled the scene and led police to the home in the 15000 block of Iliad Street in Detroit where two people inside were taken hostage. As he entered the home, the suspect fired a shot, but not at police.

Attempts to negotiate with the suspect throughout the day to surrender were unsuccessful, however a female hostage was released Tuesday evening. A male hostage escaped from the home Wednesday morning while the suspect was sleeping. Shortly after that hostage escaped, the suspect’s body was found.

During a press conference Tuesday, Detroit Police chief James Craig said the suspect admitted he suffered from mental illness and had not been taking his medication. It was also indicated the suspect was under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

The gunman was also a suspect in a triple homicide that took place in the city in June. In that case, three bodies were found in a house that was set on fire. An autopsy of the bodies found they had all been shot prior to being burned. Police are not sure about the connection between the suspect and the victims of the homicide.

Police have also not identified any relationship between the suspect and the two hostages from the most recent incident. The hostages were examined by medical workers after they left the home.
