The idea behind these products and companies were hatched by fellow officers who saw a need ... and set out to fill it

A new take on inmate transport

After 23 years on the street, Sgt. Matthew J. Planer, President of Police Innovations LLC, was well aware of the number of law enforcement officers who routinely experience unruly prisoners and expose themselves to injury and escape. He also considered agency liability (in transport and in the office) and recognized a tremendous need for safe, secure, temporary restraint.

Media accounts of similar events motivated the concept along the way. Many months of refining several ideas resulted in the development of the Supplemental Prisoner Adjustable Restraint or SPAR. The unit, when mounted on a pedestal secured to floor and wall, takes little wall space to temporarily restrain prisoners safely, simply and securely, while waiting for processing, court, transport, etc. The patented unit is universal in design and will be available to fit inside larger transport vans to limit movement of prisoner passengers. The SPAR is very simple to use. It is intended to significantly reduce liability and prevent injury to officers.

    Schedules like a well-oiled machine

Cop-For-Cop Solutions LLC and its Overtime Box is owned and operated by a New Jersey law enforcement professional who started the company in 2015.

The Overtime Box replaces ancient and haphazard ways of filling department overtime with a straightforward, cost effective, easy-to-use and time saving program. The program offers the ability to track overtime via hours or list rotation, and is in use in the New Jersey tri-state area.

According to the company it is time tested, and approved by the Fair Lawn Policemen’s Benevolent Association Local 67, New Jersey.

    Here’s to a bright idea

Brite-Strike Tactical Illumination Products Inc. was started by two police officers who wanted to create a world class tactical flashlight. It had to have features that officers and citizens could rely on for optimal safety. The brilliant, flawless white light in a small easy-to-carry size can be used to temporarily distract and disorient a suspect or attacker.

The Tactical Blue Dot switch was designed by Officer Glenn Bushee and Officer Jon Neal. It features a tri-sided barrel design for a more ergonomic grip, as well as a front and rear tri-strike-crown. The light provides maximum impact for pressure point and weapon retention techniques.

The company does not mass produce lights for mass merchant retailers, rather it manufactures in small batches with meticulous quality control—allowing them to incorporate the latest technology all the time.

    More break and rake

The BP-2 was designed and developed by J&N Tactical’s owner, Jeff Herr. Herr has over 25 years experience as a full-time police officer and 20 years as a tactical team operator.

The company specializes in noise flash diversionary devices NFDD delivery poles/systems. The BP series poles enhance safety and performance when delivering a NFDD. The BP-2 allows an operator the most effective way to break and rake a window, deliver a NFDD into an opening, and prevent the device from coming in contact with people. The BP-2 reduces the probability of the most common NFDD injuries to zero.

The BP-2 is being used by SWAT teams and special operation groups around the world.

    Master the breach

JTC’s creators were (and still are) active members of law enforcement teams. “…We had always had gear that was bought and broke or simply did not work,” says owner John A. Dapkins Jr. “We understand that gear cannot fail…there is no worse scenario in the world then a failed breach, period.”

The company released the JTC Pro-Claw mid-2015. The Pro-Claw was specifically designed for SWAT/Narc/Fugitive Units that are regularly encountering fortified doors. Its design transfers all of the prying action directly to the patented Claw teeth, resulting in a very dynamic breach. This design also increases the capability of gaping objects and doors, as well as adding more mass for ramming action and other functions.

    The JTC-Claw breaching tool (100 percent US-made) comes with a T&E program for end-users.
