COPPERAS COVE, Texas -- A Texas law enforcement agency has confirmed the line-of-duty death of an officer following a shooting on Saturday.
The Texas Rangers are leading the investigation into the incident that resulted in the on-duty death of Copperas Cove Police Officer Elijah Garretson, according to a news release.
Officials said the suspect was later located. After a lengthy negotiation attempt, the suspect died by suicide, according to the department.
The agency said it will not release additional information at this time out of respect for the officer's family and colleagues and due to the ongoing investigation. Department leaders asked the public for patience as the agency and the broader law enforcement community grieve the loss.
The department also requested that the public keep the officer's loved ones and the agency in their thoughts as the investigation continues.
