A suspect charged in the death of the sheriff of Montgomery County, Georgia escaped from police custody Tuesday morning.
Jim Lowery jumped out of a transport vehicle and ran as Treutlen County authorities were taking him to the Laurens County jail around 11:20 a.m., according to WMGT-TV.
The Laurens County Sheriff's Office has issued an alert for the area around the jail and blocked off the area near Southern Pines Road and County Farm Road.
Montgomery County Sheriff Ladson O'Connor died while pursuing Lowery on June 15. The suspect was taken into custody after a shootout with law enforcement.
He is now believed to be on the loose near the jail and is considered dangerous.
