A man walking along a highway Tuesday is accused of firing a flare gun at the cruiser of a Florida deputy who was checking on the individual.
The incident happened just before 4:30 a.m. when a Marion County sheriff's deputy spotted a man—later identified as Jacob Daniel Caldwell—walking along the highway, the agency stated in a social media post that included body camera footage of the encounter.
"Instead of a calm conversation, the deputy was met with a flare gun being fired directly at his patrol car," the agency stated.
The deputy wasn't struck by the flare, and he ordered Caldwell to surrender. The suspect refused to comply and began taking off his pants and throwing money at the deputy, who deployed his Taser twice.
Both times, Caldwell pulled out the probes, but the deputy was finally able to subdue him. Caldwell, a convicted felon, was arrested and faces the following charges:
- firing a missile into a dwelling, vehicle, building, or aircraft
- aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer
- possession of a weapon or ammo by a convicted felon
- resisting without violence
