A campus police officer with Virginia State University in Richmond was investigating a report of a disturbance when gunfire erupted after a suspect ran off campus.

A campus police officer at a Virginia university was wounded in a shooting Sunday when he was investigating a disturbance.

The shooting at Virginia State University in Richmond happened at around 1:30 a.m. when Officer Bruce Foster responded to a disturbance on campus, The Washington Post reports. Gunfire erupted after a suspect ran off campus, and Foster was shot and wounded.

The officer was rushed to the hospital in stable condition.

Following the shooting, the campus was put on lockdown. No arrests had been made as of Sunday evening.
