Tenn. Police Thwart Potential 'Mass Shooting' at Hebrew School
A gunman was critically wounded by Memphis police at a traffic stop after the suspect opened fire outside a Hebrew school when he couldn't gain entrance.
Tennessee police stopped a gunman accused of firing shots outside a Hebrew school Monday.
The incident happened shortly after noon when Memphis police received 9-1-1 calls concerning an armed man outside Margolin Hebrew Academy, ABC News reports. The suspect tried to get inside the school—security camera footage shows him entering the school's pre-entrance doors—and when he was unsuccessful, he began shooting outside the building.
The gunman drove away from the school in a truck, but police pulled him over just a few miles away. During the traffic stop, the man—allegedly with gun drawn—got out of his vehicle, and he was shot and wounded by police.
The man was rushed to the hospital, and he's in critical condition.
"I personally truly believe we prevented a tragedy," Assistant Police Chief Don Crowe said at a press conference.
