One man is dead and a Lafayette officer was injured after the suspect and police exchanged gunfire during a stolen vehicle call early Tuesday morning.

According to a release from Lafayette police, officers at 1:22 a.m. today received an automated license plate reader alert about a stolen vehicle in the area of South Boulder Road and Dixon Avenue.

Officers found the stolen vehicle, a silver Toyota Camry, unoccupied at a Circle K gas station at a gas pump. As officers arrived, two people exited the store to return to the car.

One man ran back to the stolen vehicle and began firing a handgun at the officers, striking one of them in the leg. Shots were returned by one officer and the man was found dead in the vehicle.

The second person involved was detained, and police believe there is no threat to the public. Police did not say if that person would be facing charges.

The injured officer was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital and later released, according to the Lafayette Police Department.

The officer who fired the shots was placed on administrative leave per policy while the Boulder Critical Incident Team investigates the shooting.

The identity of the deceased suspect has not yet been released by the Boulder County Coroner's Office.
