Two Phoenix police officers were injured in what officials are describing as an ambush-style shooting earlier Sunday.
The incident happen shortly after officers tried pulling over a vehicle for a traffic infraction, KPNX-TV reports. The vehicle did not stop, and the driver was able to elude police.
Eventually, the officers spotted the vehicle again and attempted a stop again. That's when shots were fired at the police vehicle from the side of the road.
A bullet struck one officer in the wrist, but he is expected to recover. Another officer suffered minor injuries from shattered glass.
Police apprehended the 18-year-old driver of the vehicle after he fled the scene on foot. The suspect gunman and driver's older brother—Devonte Thornton, 28—also was arrested by officers later in the day.
“This is the seventh Phoenix officer shot and twelfth injured in the line of duty in the past three months," Police Chief Jeri Williams said in a statement. "This kind of violence within our community and toward police officers cannot become the new normal."
