A man was shot and killed by law enforcement personnel Monday, Jan. 10, in a commercial parking lot in Rancho Cucamonga as San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies were assisting agents with the U.S. Marshals Service in detaining the man, authorities said.

Just after 2 p.m., deputies and agents contacted a man inside of his car outside of the Bass Pro Shops at 7777 Victoria Gardens Lane, said Mara Rodriguez, spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Department. The man initially refused to exit his car, but when he did exit, he had a knife in his hand, Rodriguez said during a news conference.

The suspect did not follow commands and charged at the surrounding law enforcement personnel, prompting a shooting by the officers, Rodriguez said. Law enforcement and medical personnel provided medical aid, however, the suspect was pronounced dead just after 2:30 p.m., she said.

It wasn’t immediately clear how many deputies or agents fired at or potentially struck the suspect, Rodriguez said.

No identifying information for the suspect was immediately available. It wasn’t immediately known why he was wanted by the marshals.

No other injuries were reported in the incident, Rodriguez said.

A small part of the Bass Pro Shops parking lot was temporarily closed for the investigation, she said.
