A man was shot and killed by police who were called to a domestic violence situation at a San Bernardino residence on Wednesday, Dec. 28.

Around 7:40 a.m., a woman at a home in the 100 block of East 4th Street called police, explaining that her son had been hitting her daughter-in-law before screaming for help and disconnecting, according to the San Bernardino Police Department. A few minutes later, the woman called back and said her son had attacked multiple people in the home.

She warned police that the man, identified as Warren Merriman, was armed with a knife and had just injected methamphetamine, police said in a statement.

Merriman fled inside the home as officers arrived while multiple family members standing at the front of the house warned officers about the knife.

The officers entered the home where Merriman was then ordered to drop the weapon.

He fled out the back door and tried to run towards his family members with a knife still in-hand, police said. Additional officers arriving blocked his path and again ordered him to drop the knife.

Merriman began to charge towards his family members and the officers in front of the house. Two officers fired their weapons, striking Merriman, who fell to the ground.

He was taken to a hospital where he died from his injuries.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing and anyone with information regarding the investigation was asked to contact Detective Hernandez at 909-384-5620.
