A man who allegedly shot at Chattanooga police officers Sunday night was arrested Monday morning after a highway chase, according to a press release from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

Near 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, police officers responded to reports of shots on Highway 153. Upon arrival, a man allegedly shot at the officers, and the officers returned fire, the press release said.

Both an officer and the man were injured during the exchange, the press release said, adding that the man then fled the scene by driving off in a police vehicle that was unattended, which the Tennessee Highway Patrol pursued.

The man crashed the vehicle on Highway 111 in Sequatchie County, according to a press release from the Chattanooga Police Department. The man attempted to run away from the crash and was arrested.

After the arrest, officers discovered the man had non-life-threatening injuries from the original shooting incident, and he was transported to a local hospital for treatment, the release said.

The officer who was shot is in stable condition, according to the release.

The officers who were involved were placed on paid leave, in accordance with the Police Department's policy. TBI will lead the investigation at the request of Hamilton County District Attorney Coty Wamp.
