NYPD Officer Wounded by Friendly Fire During Carjacker's Rampage

A repeat felon whose botched carjacking sparked a wild chain of events that ended with an NYPD cop being shot by friendly fire was on an unhinged rampage that left multiple people seriously wounded — including an elderly woman whose car the carjacker backed into while wildly trying to flee in a stolen car, legal filings show.

Kevin Dubuisson, 28, was arraigned Sunday on multiple assault charges, including assaulting a police officer, as well as multiple counts of robbery and menacing. In addition to a plain-clothed cop and an Uber driver — who he allegedly beat with a tire iron before stealing his black Toyota Highlander — Dubuisson seriously wounded an 87-year-old woman and her daughter when he backed into a car as they were getting out, knocking them to the ground, prosecutors said.

If convicted, Dbuisson faces up to 32 years in prison.

“This defendant brought chaos to a quiet Queens neighborhood on Friday morning when he attempted to carjack multiple people and assaulted a livery driver – events that directly led to a responding New York City Police Detective being shot in a friendly fire incident,” Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said in a statement Sunday.

“Make no mistake, this defendant’s alleged actions set into motion the events that led to Detective Corey Fisher’s hospitalization,” she said. “I wish Detective Fisher well as he recuperates from his injuries. The defendant is now facing serious charges of robbery, assault on a police officer and other crimes, and my office will aggressively prosecuten this case.”

According to the criminal complaint, Dubuisson confessed to forcing his way into one car, and was “intentionally signaling that I had a gun. I just scared him.” He also stated “the guy was afraid… he tossed the keys. I jumped in the whip. ”

The chaos unfolded Friday morning within a two block radius of a Mobil gas station and auto body shop on Parson’s Blvd. in Queens. Before stealing the black Toyota Highlander, Dubuisson tried unsuccessfully to steal a white Hyundai Santa Fe — owned by a gas station employee — that was idling in the parking lot with the keys in the vehicle, according to a criminal complaint.

But the employee fought him off when he noticed Dubuisson get in the driver’s seat, the complaint states. The employee told cops that as Dubuisson was walking away, he put his hand in his jacket and appeared to point a gun as he yelled profanities at him.

Dubuisson then went up to a woman walking on the street across from the station and, while pantomiming gripping a gun in the waistband of his pants behind his jacket, he shouted, “I’m going to f—-ing kill you, you white b——!,” both startling and frightening the woman who feared for her life, according to the complaint.

About 10 minutes after, he tried to steal the Hyundai, Dubuisson spotted an Uber driver sitting in a black Toyota Highlander with the vehicle turned off just two blocks from the gas station and demanded: “Give me the car” — while holding “what appeared to be a metal hook” to the driver’s head, the complaint stated.

The shocked driver then ran out of the car with the key fob still in his pocket and managed to run several blocks away, heading south on the Whitestone Expressway service road, before Dubuisson caught up with him and shoved him from behind, causing him to fall to the ground, according to the complaint. The driver then threw the key fob in the direction of the car.

At that point, a police officer saw the suspect run after the keys, holding what appeared to be a tire iron — and went to the Uber driver to make sure he was alright, then he pursued the suspect — who was driving away in a black Toyota Highlander. While trying to get away, the hijacker backed into another car from which an 87-year-old woman and her daughter were getting out, injuring the older woman.

After the hell-bent suspect hit the unmarked cop car, the officer got out of the car and ordered Dubuisson out of the vehicle. And at that point, several uniformed cops arrived and opened fire — with one of those shots hitting the plain-clothed cop — and nabbing Dubuisson.
