A Virginia police officer was seriously wounded in a chase with an attempted robbery suspect Wednesday.

The shooting happened at about 7:40 p.m. when Henrico police were called about an attempted robbery, WWBT-TV reports. When confronted by police, a suspect fled before opening fire.

An officer was struck, and police did not return fire. The wounded officer was seriously injured bus is expected to recover.
