Calif. Sheriff's Deputy Undergoes Surgery after Shooting

A Riverside County sheriff's deputy was in stable condition after he was wounded in a shooting while responding to a report concerning a felony hit-and-run incident in Thousand Palms.

A California deputy underwent surgery after he was shot in an incident that also left a suspect wounded Wednesday.

Riverside County sheriff's deputies were dispatched just after 7 p.m. to Thousand Palms to locate a suspect in a felony hit-and-run incident, the agency stated in a news release. While detaining a driver, the passenger in the vehicle began shooting, and the deputies returned fire.

After the exchange of gunfire, the suspect barricaded themselves inside the vehicle and refused to follow commands. Multiple agencies responded to the incident, and the driver and passenger were both taken into custody.

A deputy was struck by gunfire and rushed to the hospital. The deputy underwent surgery and was in stable condition, according to the Victorville Daily Press.

The passenger in the vehicle also was wounded by gunfire and taken to the hospital in stable condition.

The driver was arrested on an outstanding felony warrant.

Investigators from the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office and the California Highway Patrol assigned to the Riverside Sheriff’s Force Investigations Detail are looking into the incident.
