Three people — including a Kern County Sheriff's Office deputy — were wounded Friday (May 9) morning during an incident in northeast Bakersfield that led to a deputy-involved shooting, KCSO said.
Deputies dispatched at about 6:30 a.m. to the 600 block of Water Street found a man armed with a hammer, machete and firearm. A deputy-involved shooting happened, KCSO said.
A woman said she had been shot by the suspect; she was taken to a hospital.
The suspect was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer and was also taken to a hospital, a sheriff's news release said. KCSO said information on the suspect will be released once his identity is confirmed.
A deputy suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the hand during the shooting and was also taken to a hospital.
The two deputies involved in the shooting were placed on critical incident leave as the incident is investigated. KCSO said a video presentation with body-worn camera footage will be released when the investigation is finished. (Editor's note: An incident review board determined that the shooting was within the agency's policies.)
KCSO asks that anyone with information call 661-861-3110 or Kern Secret Witness at 661-322-4040.
