April 19--STANWOOD -- A police report detailing the shooting and death of a 7-year-old Marysville girl said that Derek Carlile, an off-duty police officer, heard a pop and then one of his other children told him something about a gun.
The Everett Herald reported that Carlile then ran to the family van where he found his oldest daughter, Jenna, slumped over her seat. When he saw blood, he realized she had been shot. Carlile then attempted CPR on the girl.
The police report said that it is believed that one of Carlile's other children obtained the gun while Carlile and his wife were outside speaking to the owner of an art studio where Carlile's wife works. Carlile told police that he typically keeps the gun in an ankle holster, but thinks he must have left it in a cubbyhole under the dash. After the shooting, the gun was seen on the floor between the two front bucket seats.
Detectives from Snohomish County have wrapped up their investigation of the incident and forwarded their report to the prosecutor's office for review. The prosecutor's office said it could be a few weeks before a determination as to whether to prosecute or not will be made.
Carlile is on paid administrative leave from his job.
