SEATTLE -- A suspect in the murder of an elderly man in Interbay was shot and killed by Seattle police detectives in Belltown Sunday afternoon. The man charged the detectives who were observing him from an unmarked car, and they opened fire.

The suspect, 46, is a convicted felon who is believed to have stabbed to death an 84-year-old man at a storage facility in Interbay on Saturday.

Police tracked him by his use of the elderly stabbing victim's credit cards and followed him to the location at 4th and Cedar.

The suspect charged officers, but there is no word as to whether the suspect brandished a weapon.

Earlier, a witness said the suspect was walking alongside a woman and that police swarmed him immediately after he was shot.

The suspect was transported from the scene to Harborview Medical Center where he died shortly after arrival.

The case is now being turned over to King County Sheriffs who will investigate the shooting.

Fingerprint technicians are comparing the prints of the dead man to suspect prints found at Saturday's homicide scene to confirm the man's involvement.

King County Sheriff's Office Spokesperson John Urquhart said the detective who fired the fatal shots is on paid administrative leave, which Urquhart says is standard in this type of situations.
