BALTIMORE -- A man is dead Saturday after exchanging gunfire with a police officer responding to a domestic violence call, police said.

Baltimore City police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said officers were called to the 1800 block of Hope Street on Saturday at about 1:40 a.m.

Officers said they found a man armed with a gun who had shot a 51-year-old woman.

"She was transported to a local hospital in stable condition," Baltimore police Col. Jesse Oden said. "The suspect and the victim were previously married. Our detectives are in the process of checking to see if there were ever any previous domestic violence incidents reported between them."

Guglielmi said the man was combative with police and confronted officers, saying it appeared several shots were fired by the police officer and the man. It was not clear if the man died as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound or a shot fired by a police officer.
