We tested carbine lengths from 7.5 to 16 inches, supplied by Franklin Armory of Morgan Hill, Calif. The 7.5 inch upper, far left, is lightweight and highly maneuverable. There are plenty of reasons why an officer would rather have a shorter AR-15 upper. While the shorter barrels make the carbine pistol sized, they can out perform a pistol.
