Gunman Allegedly Opens Fire on Colo. Officers

    July 31, 2013
Colorado Springs police are searching for a gunman who reportedly fired several shots at officers.

Colorado Springs police are searching for a gunman who reportedly fired several shots at officers Tuesday at Goose Gossage Park near Filmore Street and Interstate 25.

Police identified the gunman as Frank Goad, 54. Goad, who is considered armed and dangerous, is wanted on a warrant alleging attempted first-degree murder on a police officer. He is 5-foot-6, 150 pounds, with brown eyes and gray hair.

Officers with police dogs were looking for the suspect in the marsh areas along Fountain Creek, according to radio traffic.

Police said officers responded to a shots fired call in the 300 block of Karen Lane just before 4 p.m.

When officers arrived, they encountered Goad, who allegedly exchanged fire with officers and then fled the scene.

Theresa Cates, manager of Interstate Secure Storage, which is across the park on the other side of the creek, said two suspicious looking men tried to cross through her property.

"I stepped outside. I said, 'You can't cross here. You have to go around.' They went into the city lot property, jumped the fence, went down towards the creek, and we heard a shot," she said.

Cates' assistant manager, Debbie Queen, called 911. Cates said she didn't know who or what was the intended target.

"We were watching them while we waited on the police and the guy got up, the blonde guy got up, and started shooting at the cop," she said, referring to Goad.

Cates said the shooter and his companion had been sitting on the grass in the park when police arrived and then the shooter stood up suddenly.

"You saw his arm go up. You saw the gun in his hand, and you saw him shooting it," she said.

Cates said the gunman fired four to six shots.

"It was rapid," she said. "It was scary."

Cates said the shooter's companion was apprehended by police, and the shooter fled northeast "down in the creek."

"I've been here 13 years, and this is the most trouble we've saw," she said.

Cates said she was shaken by the shooting but prepared for such a situation.

"That's why we have a gun in our office. For our own protection," she said.
