Feb. 15--A young man died at a Chicago hospital Tuesday night a short time after officers from the Chicago police's Marine unit pulled him from the south branch of the Chicago River, authorities said.

Marine unit officers pulled the 20-year-old man from the chilly waters at about 8:30 p.m. on Roosevelt Road near Lumber Street on the city's Near West Side, police said.

Witnesses told police that they saw the man jump 30 or 40 feet into the water, officials said.

Paramedics weren't able to resuscitate the man and he was pronounced dead about an hour later at Stroger Hospital, said Officer Amina Greer, a police spokeswoman.
