Watch Mich. Police Officers Help with Surprise Roadside Birth
What to know
-
Portage police officers rerouted from another call and helped with an emergency childbirth after a 9-1-1 report of a woman screaming.
-
Officers helped complete the delivery and calmed the family until medics arrived.
-
Body camera footage of the response was released by police Wednesday.
The officers immediately stepped in to assist with the delivery and worked to keep the mother, father and the couple’s 2-year-old daughter calm during the birth. Police said the officers helped complete the delivery before medics arrived.
Southward told WZZM that while officers receive limited training related to emergency childbirth, the response was driven by instinct and teamwork.
“I think everyone just kind of jumped into action,” she said. “I don’t think we had time to think about anything bad. I think we were just running on adrenaline and just excitement for the new parents and their other child being so excited for the new birth.”
She described the call as a rare and meaningful experience for officers.
"Everything couldn't have gone more perfect," said Swier.
