2 Killed, 8 Seriously Injured in Brown University Shooting

Two people are dead and eight people were seriously hurt in a shooting at Brown University on Saturday night, according to Providence Mayor Betty Smiley.

The eight people injured were at local hospitals and were in stable condition, Smiley said in a press conference just after 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 13.

The shooter was not in custody as of 6:38 p.m. on Saturday, Smiley said.

They were identified as a male dressed in black who initially exited on to Hope Street from the Barus & Holley Engineering building, where the shooting began at 4:05 p.m., officials said.

A shelter in place warning was still in effect for the area of Brown University and the surrounding area, including residents and businesses in the nearby area. All updates will come through the City of Providence social media channels, the mayor said.

It is unclear how the suspect entered the building, where a final exam was taking place between 2 and 5 p.m., according to the officials.

It is not clear whether the shooting happened during the exam, nor the exact individuals who were inside the building at the time of the shooting.

A family reunification at Brown University will be set up at 7 p.m., Smiley said. Students have been relocated to receive support services at a secure location, the Brown University provost stated.

“Lock doors, silence phones and stay hidden until further notice,” an emergency statement at 4:22 p.m. from the university said.

“Remember: RUN, if you are in the affected location, evacuate safely if you can; HIDE, if evacuation is not possible, take cover; FIGHT, as a last resort, take action to protect yourself. Stay tuned for further safety information.”

University officials initially told students and staff that a suspect was in custody, before later saying that was not the case and that police were still searching for a suspect or suspects, according to alerts issued through Brown’s emergency notification system.
