An Indiana police officer was critically wounded when he was stabbed by a suspect during a call Monday.

The incident happened shortly before 6 p.m. when Fort Wayne police responded to a domestic disturbance report, the department stated in a news release posted to social media. After police arrived, an officer and a suspect became embroiled in a struggle.

The officer was stabbed during the altercation, and the other officers opened fire. Both the officer and the suspect were injured, and medics were called to the scene.

The officer was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, according to the department. The suspect also was taken to hospital, but no details were released concerning the individual's condition.

The department, along with Indiana State Police and the Allen County Prosecutor's Office, is investigating the incident.
