A Kansas City, Kansas, police officer stabbed a man several times with a knife during a struggle in which the man allegedly attempted to grab the officer’s gun Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

Both the man and the officer were injured in the incident, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation said in a news release Tuesday evening.

KBI officials said the confrontation happened after Kansas City, Kansas, police located a vehicle Tuesday afternoon in the 2900 block of State Avenue that was linked to an incident earlier in the day in which a suspect fled from a traffic stop and ran over an officer’s foot.

Once police located the vehicle, they approached and directed a man inside to get out. The man got out and ran from police, authorities said. Two officers caught up to the man and confronted him.

As they wrestled with the man, he grabbed at an officer’s gun on his belt, and when he did, the officer stabbed the man multiple times, authorities said. The other officer hit the man with a baton, and police arrested the man.

One of the officers broke his hand during the struggle, was taken to an area hospital and was released. The man who was stabbed was said to be stable and was expected to survive, officials said.

KBI officials are investigating the incident.
