A man accused of shoplifting at the Galleria was hospitalized Sunday after he jumped from the second floor onto the mall's ice rink while attempting to evade police.
The man, whose identity was not immediately released by authorities, was taken to the hospital with multiple injuries, the Houston Police Department told ABC13. Charges against the man were pending as of Monday afternoon.
The incident comes weeks after a man was fatally shot inside a Galleria parking garage on June 4. Last month, Houston police shot a man near the Galleria after he allegedly injured an officer with his vehicle.
It's common for the Galleria to make headlines for reported crime, but a 2023 analysis of crime data by the Chronicle revealed the mall's overall crime level was just slightly higher than the pre-pandemic peak in early 2020. Violent crimes at the Galleria have remained relatively flat since 2019, HPD data showed at the time.
