Police lights — Two Peabody police officers were injured trying to arrest a robbery suspect who allegedly drove into them and fled a mall parking lot before being captured days later.

PEABODY, MA—Two Peabody police officers were struck by a car driven by a suspect in a robbery at Macy’s earlier this week, an incident that eventually led to the arrest of two people.

Police were called to the Macy’s at the Northshore Mall around 8:30 p.m. on Monday over a report of a man and a woman shoplifting from the store, the Peabody Police Department said in a statement Thursday afternoon.

The suspects left the store with $1,660 worth of merchandise they had concealed and did not pay for, according to the statement. As Macy’s loss prevention contacted police to report the apparent crime, the male suspect allegedly engaged in threatening behavior toward the employee and fled.

Not long after, he was located by police near a vehicle in the mall parking lot and a struggle ensued as they tried to take him in custody, the statement said.

The man then got into the vehicle and drove away, striking Peabody police officers Luis Osorio and Nicholas Melto and dragging one with the vehicle, according to the statement.

The officers were both injured and received medical treatment.

Police arrested the female suspect at the scene. She was later identified as Ta’kerria Tanae Sherrod-Greene, 20, of Boston, and charged with unarmed robbery. Due to an incident that occurred on Sept. 7, she was also charged with shoplifting by concealing merchandise.

Romello McCain, 20, of Boston, was arrested Thursday by members of the Boston Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section on an arrest warrant issued by Peabody District Court, according to the statement.

McCain was charged with unarmed robbery, assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon (motor vehicle), assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, wanton destruction of property, and leaving the scene of an accident involving personal injury and property damage.

He is expected to be arraigned in Peabody District Court on Friday.

“I am grateful that Officer Osorio and Officer Melto are home safe and recovering,” Peabody police Chief Tom Griffin said in the statement. “I am incredibly proud of the professionalism and determination of our Peabody Police officers in identifying and receiving an arrest warrant for Mr. McCain.

“I also want to thank the Boston Police Department and Massachusetts State Police for their invaluable assistance and partnership.”
