Mass. Police Officer Struck by Fleeing Suspect in Gun Probe

A Springfield police officer was taken to the hospital with a leg injury sustained while detectives with the Firearms Investigation Unit were trying to pull over a driver.

SPRINGFIELD, MA—A police officer was injured while trying to make a traffic stop during a firearms investigation Thursday night.

Detectives with the Firearms Investigation Unit attempted to stop a driver at about 7:15 p.m. on Fort Pleasant Avenue. The driver tried to flee and struck the officer, said Ryan Walsh, police spokesman.

The officer received a leg injury and was rushed to Baystate Medical Center for treatment by other police who were on the call, said Ryan Walsh, police spokesman.

The driver was arrested on drug and firearm charges. Police also seized a gun and a large amount of cocaine during the stop, he said.

The driver’s name and the crimes he was charged with were not immediately available, Walsh said.
