Two Indianapolis police officers were wounded Wednesday in an exchange of gunfire that left an armed suspect dead.

The incident happened just before 10:30 p.m. when police responded to calls about a disturbance possibly involving someone with a gun, the department stated in a news release on social media. When officers reached the scene, they encountered a man, who began shooting at police.

Two officers were struck by the initial shots. Police returned fire, and the gunman was struck at least once.

One wounded officer was rushed to the hospital in a cruiser, while the other was taken by ambulance. Both were in stable condition, but no details were released concerning the nature and severity of their injuries.

The suspect also was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A handgun was recovered at the scene. The shooting is under investigation.
