MARKED TREE, Arkansas — A Marked Tree Police Department officer was killed and another officer was injured in an early-morning vehicle crash Sunday, according to the Arkansas State Police.
Officer Trevor Howard, 25, died from injuries sustained in the collision, which occurred at approximately 2:50 a.m. at the intersection of Broadway and Nathan streets. Howard joined the Marked Tree Police Department as a full-time officer in May.
According to the Arkansas State Police, Officer Anthony Johnson, 22, was driving a Dodge Ram 1500 east on Nathan Street with Howard riding in the passenger seat when the crash occurred. Johnson was transported to NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital in Jonesboro with non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators said a 1991 Mercury Grand Marquis driven by Kareem Jones, 28, of Marked Tree, was traveling north on Broadway/Highway 14 when Jones allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign and struck the officers' vehicle on the passenger side, causing it to overturn.
Jones sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Regional One Health in Memphis for treatment.
The Arkansas State Police is investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. No additional information has been released.
