A man being sought by authorities after opening fire on the Hichinson County, Texas Sheriff was killed in a shootout that wounded a deputy Thursday evening.

Christopher Garza, who police said fired multiple shots at Sheriff Kirk Coker and his patrol vehicle during an attempted traffic stop Wednesday, died in an exchange of gunfire that left an unidentified female deputy, according to Amarillo Globe News.

Deputies were searching for Garza north of Fritch around 4:35 p.m. Thursday the suspect shot and wounded the deputy before deputies returned fire, fatally wounding him.

Police closed State Highway 136 shortly after the shooting to create a landing zone so that the wounded deputy could be transported to Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo

The investigation of Garza's death in the shootout has been turned over to the Texas Rangers.
