FORT WORTH, Texas — A veteran patrol officer remained in a local hospital Wednesday afternoon after being seriously injured when a vehicle hit him as he tried to remove a couch from a freeway Tuesday night, police said.
The officer, who has not been identified, suffered a broken leg, cuts and bruises.
The officer was in good condition Wednesday afternoon at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth.
The officer responded to a call of debris in the highway about 10 p.m. Tuesday in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 30 at Henderson Street near downtown.
Police said he began to set out cones and flares.
“The officer was out of his patrol car when he was struck by a vehicle,” Fort Worth police Capt. David McElroy said in an email Wednesday.
The motorist stopped to render aid, police said.
The officer is a 13-year veteran of the department.
Traffic investigators were called to the scene, and no charges are expected to be filed in the incident, police said.
