A Jefferson Parish, La. Sheriff's deputy was critically injured in a cruiser crash Tuesday morning.
Deputy Jaron Fountain was responding to a reported burglary in Waggaman that investigators later discovered was false, according to WDSU-TV.
Col. John Fortunato told reporters that the crash occurred on Live Oak Boulevard shortly after 2:30 a.m. when the deputy apparently lost control of his vehicle and ended up in a ditch.
The four-year veteran of the agency was transported to LSU Interim Hospital in New Orleans where he was listed in critical condition.
Officials said that Fountain was responding to a call from an elderly woman who reported five people had climbed into her home through her window and were refusing to leave. While conducting a search of the home, an elderly man told deputies the woman suffers from dementia and there was no one in their home.
The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.
