A man shot a Fort Lauderdale Police K-9 on Saturday while officers tried to arrest him during a burglary investigation, police said.
Christian Q. Bouie, 30, of Fort Lauderdale, is facing charges of use of a deadly weapon on a police animal, interfering with law enforcement officers with violence, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and resisting officers without violence.
Shortly before 7:30 p.m. Saturday, officers were called to the 1600 block of Northwest 16th Court about a “possible” burglary at a home, the police department said in a news release Monday.
A suspect, later identified as Bouie, tried to flee the perimeter officers set up during the investigation, the department said. As an officer released K-9 Appie, a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois, to apprehend him, Bouie shot the dog in its shoulder.
Bouie was arrested after officers released another K-9, the news release said. Officers found a gun at the scene.
Further details about the possible burglary were not released.
Appie is in stable condition Monday and was scheduled to have surgery.
Bouie was being held in the Broward Main Jail. Court records were not available.
